Blood Orange Strawberry Smoothie Bowl

I love drinking smoothies when I am on the go but there is something so indulgent about smoothie bowls! Smoothie bowls are nearly as quick and easy to prepare however, they come with a little extra. Placing a smoothie in a bowl and adding delicious toppings immediately elevates it from your standard breakfast smoothie.

I love cooking with in-season fruits and veggies. Why? Because it helps with switching up those everyday recipes with produce that is in season. Blood oranges are easy to find this time of year and they are in their prime so it is the star ingredient in this smoothie bowl.

The Blood Orange Strawberry Smoothie Bowl is a sweet blend of fruits, topped off with turmeric for added nutrients. If you are looking for healthy smoothie bowl recipes, then this one is sure to become a go-to!

Are smoothie bowls actually healthy?

Smoothie bowls can be just as healthy as regular smoothies. However, smoothie bowls are only as healthy as the ingredients you add to them.

When considering the structure of your smoothie bowl, choose 2-3 fruits, milk, or yogurt (or a dairy-free alternative) and additional ingredients for texture, flavor, and nutrients.

With smoothie bowls, you have the potential to add even more good-for-you ingredients than the smoothie because of the added toppings. Let’s review what goes into a Blood Orange Strawberry Smoothie Bowl!

What are Blood Oranges?

Blood oranges are deliciously juicy winter citrus that is in season starting in December through April. They are a natural mutation of standard oranges. However, blood oranges are usually smaller and denser with thicker skin.

Of course, the biggest visual difference between a blood orange and a regular orange is the maroon, crimson or dark red color of the blood orange flesh. The distinct color of the blood orange is the result of anthocyanin, a process that occurs during the winter.

Blood oranges are also sweeter and tart, with hints of floral and sometimes, even raspberry or cherries. Health benefits include:

  • Packed with antioxidants
  • Contain 75% of the daily recommendation for vitamin C
  • Contains immunity boosting properties
  • High in potassium and fiber

What are the benefits of turmeric?

After reading about the health benefits of turmeric a while back, I decided to add it to my daily diet with capsules. I also consume a cup or two of turmeric tea every day to combat my seasonal depression.

However, I love adding turmeric to my recipes when I can. It’s a natural anti-inflammatory that aids with arthritis pain or swelling in the body. Some more benefits include:

  • Lessens inflammation
  • Improves memory
  • Helps fight depression
  • Reduces pain

  1. I love this so much! The blood orange and strawberry combo was great in this smoothie bowl. I added some of my homemade tropical granola and it was spot on.
